15 Weird Dog Facts That Will Make You Look at Your Pup Differently

Your dog is a very good boy. Also a very strange one.

Dogs have been our best friends for thousands of years, and they still manage to surprise us. Here are 15 real dog facts that explain the sniffing, the zoomies and those irresistible puppy dog eyes.

1.Their noses are basically fingerprints

Each dog's nose has its own pattern of ridges and creases, and it's thought to be unique, kind of like a human fingerprint. Your dog has been leaving signed nose art on your windows this whole time.

2.Their sense of smell is ridiculous

By some estimates, a dog's nose is somewhere between 10,000 and 100,000 times more sensitive than ours. They can probably smell the snack in your pocket from across the room. They definitely can.

3.Dogs aren't actually colorblind

Dogs do see color, just not as many as we do. They mostly see shades of blue and yellow, so that bright red ball on green grass is a lot harder for them to spot than you'd think.

4.They sweat through their paws

Dogs' human-style sweat glands are in their paw pads, but that's barely how they cool off. Panting does most of the work, which is why your pup looks like it just ran a marathon after a walk to the mailbox.

5.Puppies are born with their eyes and ears closed

Newborn puppies can't see or hear. Their eyes usually open at around two weeks old, and their ears open up a little after that. Until then, it's all smelling, snuggling and milk.

6.One breed doesn't really bark

The basenji, an African hunting dog, is known as the "barkless dog." Instead of barking, it makes a strange yodel-like sound. It's still loud. Just loud in a more musical way.

7.Greyhounds are speed demons

Greyhounds can reach top speeds of around 45 miles per hour, making them one of the fastest dogs on the planet. They're also famous couch potatoes, so it evens out.

8.Dalmatian puppies are born without spots

Dalmatians are born plain white, and their famous spots start showing up when they're a couple of weeks old. It's like a slow-loading picture, but cuter.

9.Some dogs have blue-black tongues

Chow chows (and Chinese shar-peis) are known for their blue-black tongues. Nobody is completely sure why. They just like to keep things mysterious.

10.Puppy dog eyes are a real superpower

A 2019 study found that dogs have a facial muscle that lets them raise their inner eyebrows and make those sad, irresistible eyes. Wolves mostly don't have it. Dogs evolved to guilt-trip us. It's working.

11.They drink water with a backward tongue scoop

When dogs drink, they curl the tip of their tongue backward and slap it into the water, pulling up a little column that they snap their mouth around. That's why the floor around the bowl looks like a splash zone.

12.The zoomies have a scientific name

Those sudden bursts of wild running are called FRAPs, short for "frenetic random activity periods." It's a very fancy name for doing laps around the couch at 9 p.m.

13.One breed has extra toes

The Norwegian lundehund has at least six toes on each foot, plus super-flexible joints. It was bred to climb rocky cliffs and hunt puffins, which is a sentence nobody expected to read today.

14.Dogs run warmer than we do

A dog's normal body temperature is around 101°F to 102.5°F, a few degrees higher than ours. So yes, your dog really is a furry little heater.

15.That grass-kicking thing is a message

When a dog kicks the ground after doing its business, it may be spreading its scent from glands in its paws. It's basically leaving a note for the neighborhood: "I was here."
