15 Things That Happen at Literally Every Thanksgiving Dinner

The turkey changes. The chaos never does.

Different families, different recipes, same exact Thanksgiving. If you've ever sat at a holiday table in America, you've lived through every one of these.

1.The turkey is "almost ready" for three straight hours

Someone pokes it with a thermometer, sighs and closes the oven again. Dinner was supposed to be at 2. It is now 4:45.

2.There's a kids' table, and you're still at it

You have a mortgage and a 401(k), but there are only so many chairs, so here you are next to a 7-year-old explaining slime.

3.Someone brings a "healthy twist" on a classic

Cauliflower stuffing. Sugar-free pie. It sits untouched next to the real stuff, and everyone politely takes one spoonful.

4.The oven becomes a game of Tetris

Four casseroles, one turkey, two racks. Someone is reheating rolls in the toaster and nobody is asking questions.

5.A relative asks when you're getting married, having kids or getting a "real job"

Pick one. Sometimes all three. Before you've even taken off your coat.

6.The dog has never been more well-behaved

Sitting perfectly. Staring deeply. Waiting for one tiny slice of turkey to hit the floor.

7.There's a debate about the cranberry sauce

Half the table wants the homemade kind. The other half wants it shaped exactly like the can, ridges and all.

8.Somebody's in charge of the parade on TV and somebody else is in charge of the game

The remote changes hands more times than the gravy boat.

9.You eat so fast you forget to take a picture

You meant to get a nice shot of the table. Now it's a crime scene of empty dishes.

10.Someone falls asleep sitting up

Usually an uncle. Usually in the comfy chair. Usually mid-sentence.

11.Pie happens even though everyone is full

"I couldn't possibly." Five minutes later: pumpkin AND pecan, with a little whipped cream on each.

12.There are way too many potatoes

Mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, a potato casserole somebody's neighbor recommended. Nobody planned this. It just happens every year.

13.The "who's washing dishes" standoff

Everyone suddenly has an urgent phone call, a kid to check on or a sudden interest in football.

14.Leftovers get divided like a family inheritance

Containers come out. Negotiations begin. Someone is guarding the last of the stuffing like it's gold.

15.You leave swearing you'll never eat again

Then you make a turkey sandwich at 10 p.m. Tradition is tradition.
