15 Things Everyone Does With Their Leftover Halloween Candy

The trick-or-treating is over. The snacking is just getting started.

Halloween night ends, but the candy lasts a lot longer (or at least it's supposed to). Whether it's the bowl you bought for trick-or-treaters or your kid's overflowing pillowcase, these are the things that happen to every leftover Halloween stash in America.

1.You buy "extra, just in case"

Three bags for the trick-or-treaters. Two more in case you run out. Eleven kids show up. You now own a candy warehouse.

2.The big candy dump on the living room floor

Every bag gets flipped upside down and the whole haul is spread out like a crime scene. Nobody is allowed to touch anything until it's sorted.

3.Sorting it by category like a professional

Chocolate here. Fruity stuff there. Lollipops in their own sad little corner. Some kids have spreadsheets. Some parents do too.

4.The trading floor opens

Two fruity chews for one peanut butter cup. No deals on the full-size bars. Siblings negotiate harder than most people do for a car.

5.Parents charge the "candy tax"

A small percentage of every haul quietly disappears into a grown-up's pocket. It's for safety reasons. Very important safety reasons.

6.You eat the good stuff first

The chocolate is gone in two days. What's left is a rock-hard bag of whatever nobody wanted, and it will live in the pantry until spring.

7.Or you save the good stuff for last

You ration it like a squirrel preparing for winter. By the time you remember it, it's Valentine's Day.

8.Candy corn gets passed around like a hot potato

Some people love it. Some people are afraid of it. Either way, it somehow ends up back in your bowl no matter how many times you give it away.

9.You hide your favorite pieces from your own family

Behind the frozen peas. Inside a coffee mug. In a sock drawer. You know where it is. Nobody else does.

10."Just one" turns into a pile of wrappers

You meant to have a little treat after dinner. Now there's a tiny mountain of wrappers next to you and you're not sure how it happened.

11.Candy shows up in every lunch box for a month

Sandwich, apple, a small chocolate bar. Repeat until November is over.

12.Someone tries to bake it into something

Candy cookies. Candy brownies. Candy bark. Melting it down into a dessert totally makes it healthier. Right?

13.The office candy bowl suddenly overflows

Everyone brings in their leftovers on November 1. By noon, the whole team is on a sugar rush and nobody is answering email.

14.You find a stray piece weeks later

In a coat pocket, between the couch cushions or at the bottom of a tote bag. It feels like finding money. You eat it immediately.

15.You swear you'll buy less next year

You won't. Next October you'll stand in the candy aisle and grab five bags again. Tradition is tradition.
