15 Things Everyone Does the Second It Gets Cold Outside
It's 55 degrees and you've already found the big coat.

One day it's light-jacket weather, and the next you're wearing three layers to check the mail. If the first real cold snap of the year has hit your town, you're probably doing every single one of these right now.
1.You call it "freezing" when it's 50 degrees
Last month, 50 degrees was a nice afternoon. Now it's an emergency. Your body forgot what cold feels like, and it's being very dramatic about it.
2.You find treasure in last year's coat pocket
A crumpled receipt, a mystery cough drop, one glove and, if you're lucky, a five-dollar bill. Best day of the season.
3.The great thermostat battle begins
One person nudges it up a degree. Someone else quietly nudges it back down. Nobody admits anything. This will continue until spring.
4.The fuzzy socks come out and never leave
Once they're on, they're on. Fuzzy socks are now your entire personality, and honestly, that's a solid choice.
5.Getting out of bed becomes a serious negotiation
The bed is warm. The floor is cold. The air is cold. You lie there for 10 minutes calculating exactly how late you can get up and still make it.
6.You get zapped by every doorknob in the house
Cold winter air tends to be dry, and dry air makes static electricity build up more easily. So now touching a doorknob, a light switch or your best friend comes with a tiny, betrayal-level shock.
7.Soup becomes a food group
Soup for lunch. Soup for dinner. Thinking about tomorrow's soup while eating today's soup. It's officially soup season and you're all in.
8.You see your breath and pretend to be a dragon
No adult is too old for this. You will absolutely puff out a cloud on the way to the car and feel very powerful about it.
9.The car turns into a refrigerator overnight
You sit down on an ice-cold seat, grip an ice-cold steering wheel and wait for the heater to do literally anything. It will warm up right as you pull into the parking lot.
10.Your lip balm count goes from zero to seven
There's one in your coat, one in your bag, one by the bed and four you'll find in the laundry later. Your lips are still somehow chapped.
11.You layer until your arms stick out like a snowman's
T-shirt, sweater, hoodie, coat, scarf. You can no longer put your arms down, but you are warm, and that's what matters.
12.The blanket becomes a cape
You don't just sit under a blanket anymore. You wear it around the house, from room to room, like a cozy little superhero.
13.Your nose starts running the moment you step outside
Cold, dry air can make your nose produce extra fluid to warm and moisten the air you breathe in. Helpful for your lungs. Less helpful for your dignity.
14.Someone you know is still wearing shorts
Every family, office and neighborhood has one. It's 35 degrees out, and they're in shorts with a hoodie, insisting they're "fine." Nobody understands them.
15.You start shopping for a coat you won't buy
You open 20 browser tabs of puffy coats, compare them for a week and then wear the same coat you've had since college. Again.
