15 Things From the '90s That Kids Today Will Never Understand

Rewinding tapes, dial-up noises and calling your friend's house phone.

If you grew up in the '90s, you remember a world with no smartphones, no streaming and a lot of waiting. Here are 15 things today's kids will never understand.

1.The sound of dial-up internet

That screeching, beeping noise meant you were about to get online, as long as nobody picked up the phone.

2.Nobody could call while you were online

The internet and the phone used the same line, so it was one or the other.

3.Rewinding tapes before returning them

Many video stores charged a fee if you didn't, and "Be kind, rewind" stickers were everywhere.

4.Picking a movie at the video store

Walking the aisles on a Friday night and hoping the new release wasn't all checked out.

5.Memorizing phone numbers

You knew your best friend's number by heart, plus your grandma's and the pizza place's.

6.Calling a friend's house and talking to their parents first

"Hi, is Jessica home?" was a whole social skill.

7.Saturday morning cartoons

If you missed them, they were gone until next week. No streaming, no replay.

8.Making mixtapes off the radio

Waiting with your finger on the record button and hoping the DJ didn't talk over the intro.

9.Disposable cameras

You had 24 or 27 shots, and you didn't see a single photo until they came back from the drugstore.

10.Stretching the phone cord as far as it would go

Just for a little privacy in the next room.

11.The floppy disk

Kids know it as the "save" icon. We knew it as 1.44 MB of storage, less than a single phone photo today.

12.Encyclopedias on CD-ROM

School research meant sitting at the family computer and waiting for the disc to load.

13.Keychain virtual pets

You had to feed them, clean up after them and keep them alive through the school day.

14.Checking the TV listings to see what was on

There was no searching. You flipped channels or checked the printed guide.

15.Being totally unreachable

Once you left the house, nobody could reach you until you came home for dinner, and that was normal.
